Hume City Council recognises the rich Aboriginal heritage within the municipality and acknowledges the Gunung-Willam-Balluk of the Wurundjeri as the Traditional Custodians of this land. Council embraces Aboriginal living culture as a vital part of Australia's identity and recognises, celebrates and pays respect to the existing family members of the Gunung-Willam-Balluk and to Elders past and present. Mayor's Message Our community is full of so many amazing people who go above and beyond to make Hume a great place to live. I was proud to see some of these outstanding residents recognised as part of our Australia Day celebrations through the announcement of our Citizen and Young Citizen of the Year and our Community Event of the Year. The quality of the nominations for these awards was exceptional with so many nominees making a significant contribution to our community. I congratulate all nominees and award recipients and thank them for their efforts. You can read more about the award winners on page 3. It's not just the amazing people who make Hume a great place to live. Did you know that one in every three households in Hume owns a dog or cat? We know that your furry family members are important too, and that's why they are also important to Council. It's important that you register your pet so that we can identify and return them to you if they are lost. It also helps Council provide facilities such as shelters and dog parks. Pet registrations are due on Wednesday 10 April. For more information, visit Your Council is always looking forward and planning for ways to make our City the best that it can be. We have begun working on a plan for the 2019/20 financial year. The Draft Council Plan 2017–21 (2019/20 actions) and Budget 2019/20 will be open for public submissions from Wednesday 1 May to Wednesday 29 May. I encourage everyone to have their say and give their feedback. Finally, I would like to wish all the mothers in Hume a happy Mother's Day for Sunday 12 May. I hope it's a wonderful day for you and your family! Enjoy this edition of Hume Pride. Cr Carly Moore Mayor of Hume
