This will be my third time as Mayor of this great community - I greatly appreciate being elected and feel fortunate to have been given this responsibility once again. Advocating for better education outcomes and supporting youth employment are at the top of my agenda as the new Mayor of Hume. I believe it is important for our community to have access to the infrastructure and services they need to be safe, active, healthy and lifelong learners. As a schoolteacher, education is my passion and I truly believe it can enrich lives – therefore, my priority for our community is to have access to education and training opportunities, so everyone can see themselves as a lifelong learner. Having lived in this area all my life, I think I have a good knowledge of this community, its people and the issues we face. I am extremely proud of having grown up here, and I encourage our community to have pride in this great City. By working together we can make a difference! Focus for the year ahead Whilst in the Mayor's chair, I would like to focus on several areas where I believe we can make a difference: I look forward to the revitalisation of the Broadmeadows area – from Council moving forward with the Broadmeadows Town Hall redevelopment, to projects such as the Jacana Valley redevelopment, and our continued advocacy efforts for the upgrade of the Broadmeadows Train Station, and other significant projects. Making a commitment to listening to our residents about what they value so we can better respond to concerns in the community. At every opportunity I will advocate to other levels of Government, particularly in the lead up to the State Election next year. I am passionate about jobs and skills, especially for our young people, and will continue to drive initiatives in this area. I am extremely proud of Hume's commitment and reputation as a learning community and I look forward to the continued work as we move towards the realisation of the Hume Global Learning Centre in Sunbury. With the rapid development occurring in some pockets of Hume, I will push for better roads and services for our community. The year ahead promises to be an exciting one - we will face much growth, change and development, and I look forward to leading the City through this. I also look forward to seeing many of you at our upcoming events over the summer period. On behalf of Council, I wish you all a happy and safe festive season and a wonderful 2018. Cr Geoff Porter, Mayor of Hume Contact Us Hume City Council recognises the rich Aboriginal heritage within the municipality and acknowledges the Gunung-Willam-Balluk of the Wurundjeri as the Traditional Custodians of this land. Council embraces Aboriginal living culture as a vital part of Australia's identity and recognises, celebrates and pays respect to the existing family members of the Gunung-Willam-Balluk and to Elders past and present.
